Mosaic Experiential Marketing – Meg Kerr

Today’s guest speaker is Meg Kerr, the Social Media Manager from Mosaic Experiential Marketing. We were all excited to see her. Due to her specialties in the company, today’s topic will be based on Social Media, which is something that she has to deal with every day.

SOMETHING ABOUT MEG KERR
  • She has been working there ever since 2006.
  • Her duty: social media strategy, community management, analytics, and blog outreach, etc

WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?
“Social media is like teen sex. Everyone wants to do it. No one knows how. When finally done, there’s surprise it’s not better.” (Avinash Kaushi)

“social media is an umbra term that defines that varies activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audios.” Wikipedia.
Ie. Youtubes, facebook, twitters,

KEYNOTES ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
  • Your objective is priority. You have to figure out what you want to achieve, and then look at the social media solution, to see what is the best solution for that.
  • Social media is the fundamental in the way, how people talk to each other.
  • People trust peer recommendation, and what people’s talking instead of trusting advertisement.

FOUR NEW SOCIAL MEDIA TRENDS

1. Real Time Plus Mobile Devices
  • Technology that allows anyone to share and search for information in real time and from anywhere has fundamentally and irrevocably changed the way we get information
    • We access information much quicker and accurate than reporter’s news online. ie (Twitter about the fire)
    • It’s like traditional word of mouth.
    • Nearly 1 third of Canadian own a smartphone
    • In March 2011, smartphone penetration hit 32.8% in Canada, slightingly higher than the U.S.
  • “ As recently as the last decade, most of the media was available for public consumption was produced by professionals those days are over, never to return.”

2. Location Based Services And Geotagging
  • Increase in GPS-enabled smartphone penetration is a driving force behind the rise in popularity of LBS and you would not exist without this technology.
    • Instead of telling your friends where you are via as status undated. FourSquares work by “checking to locations” from your phone
    • Social Gaming aspects
      • Option to leave tips for location. Ie, Try the fish and chips they are amazing, such as restaurants.
  • Business seeing the values and partnering with foursquare to provide special discounts for mayors
    • Get points for checking in to different locations, can unlock badges, and even be named “mayor” if you’ve checked into a location more than that
    • There’s now 15 million users on foursquare
    • When I did this chat in March 2010, this number is 1 million.
    • Twitter 2 years to hit 1 million users. It took foursquare half this time

 3. Privacy
  • In order to attract users, sites need to offer way for members to restrict the info about them that get shared with a wide publiC. But if a site allows members to keep too much of there information private, there will be less traffic can be turn into profits.
    • Twitter is one of the least private networks.
      • You can read anyone’s’ tweets, whether you are following them or not
      • Tweets are even indexed on goggles
  • “Please rob me” – listing all those empty homes out there. It’s like for sharing information to raise awareness of privacy issues.

4. Social Media Gets Less Social
  • It’s more like a trend
  • If the 1st and 2nd generation of social networking portals were about opening up the world, the third generation is about closing it again
    • As mass networking like Twitter and Facebook fill up with noise, users are looking for ways to cut through the clutter
  • With groups, lists and niche networks coming more popular mass networks could begin to feel more “exclusive”
  • People are beginning to seek out exclusive, niche networks. Invariant only sisters are popping up everywhere, creating exclusive, gated virtual community that shut out the “mass”
    • Gaining entry into this new generation of private online world can involved an intimidating process of review, such as career-oriented sites bluechipexperts.com and doostag.com, were aspiring member must submit their resumes to be consider for acceptance.
  • People get overwhelmed that starts to initiate tools to control the things they don’t care about

“Social Suicide" – if you enter all the social media contact such as Facebook, and twitters, then it will help you to delete all of your privacy account.

Advertising Fee: Facebook is cheaper than print advertisement, but it’s more depending on the objectives. People consumes more digitally than print. At the end, it is all depending on the preferences of the person.

Facebookad.com
  • You can mock up an ad, then posting on the website, then you can see how many people inside that region are using on Facebook.
  • Cost will be estimate based on Cost for impression, or Pay Cost Per Click.

Sheridan Athletic Therapy Centre

Today is December 2, 2011. Instead of staying in class for guest speaker presentation as usual, all of us went to Sheridan Athletic Therapy Centre to get some physical assessment done.

Before I was in this program, I used to do Acupuncture and Body Message once in a while because I always have a back pain and a neck pain. All therapists in the past said the pain was caused by sitting too long in front of the computer and not excercising enough on a weekly basis. These pain seem to be a bit worsen lately probably because I was just too stressful when it's almost the end of the semester. (All projects are due at the same time...-_-!)

Today, it is actually nice to get out from the classroom and get some fresh air outside. It was my first time been to this Therapy Centre and it's located in Brampton. I was carpooling in with a few of the classmates from Oakville.

SHERIDAN ATHLETIC CENTRE

Sheridan Athletic Therapy Centre was operated by the Sheridan's Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Athletic Therapy) program. It is located at the Davis Campus and it provides services to its students, faculty and staff as well as the general public.

In this facility, senior-level students work under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Therapist to provide assessment and rehabilitation services for a large variety of orthopaedic injuries.

The lab is so nice. There's a large exercise intervention research centre where people can do exercise and there's a small swimming pool as well.

After we arrived at the Therapy Clinic, we started our exercise freely as we wandering around the lab. Later on, we started to do some personal assessment based on our conditions one by one. I told the therapist where the pain occurred on my back, then he carefully wrote down all the symptoms I described and gave me a massage on the places where I feel painful. Later on, Two therapists came in and leaded us to do some group exercise: stretching, twisting, etc. The two therapists carefully demonstrated and briefly talked about the reasons behind why we should do so in each step. We all listened carefully because it's all for our own benefits. I think from now on, I will start to do these exercising steps once in a while when I am working at home.

SOME OF THE KEY NOTES WE SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO

Some of the injuries that are commonlly found in those work in web design are:
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Eye Strain
  • Sciatic Nerve Irritation
All of the injuries are overuse injuries. There are normally signs and symptoms that are precursors to the actual injury. Some common signs and symptoms to watch for are:

Tightness and ache in forearms
Tightness/"Knots" in shoulders and neck
Tension Headache
Tingling and/or numbness either intermittent or prolonged
Pain that can not be relieved with stretching
Decreased range of motion in neck, shoulders, wrists, low back

Almost all of the injuries are caused by changes in posture. Before that symptoms become too aggressive, it's important to do some intervention. if left-Untreated these injuries will limit your ability to do your job, cause you to loose time from work, and may even need a surgical intervention to correct. Normally, due to the cause of the injuries, the surgical interventions have limited success.

It's recommended that a person break for 5-10 mins for every hour spent at a workstation. Here I have attached the handout we got from the clinic as a helpful handy guide for future use.

GILLIAN'S HOME
After we finished the assessment, we all went to Gillian's home at Brampton. I was kinna excited because I have never been to a teacher's home before. We ordered pizza once we got in. I went to Lablaws, and just brought some really delicious grapes for this house party. It was awesome! We were all hungry and tired after all those exercise we did. I am always those types who was always reluctant to do exercise at the beginning, but always complementing a lot at the end because I was feeling good after all. Every body was just chilling and talking. Overall, we had a great time at Gillian's home.
